Successful completion meets the academic requirements for application for IOSH Technical membership (TechIOSH) and its designatory letters.

IOSH Level 3 Syllabus: Four Mandatory Units

To be awarded the IOSH Level 3 Certificate in Occupational Safety and Health Principles and Practice, learners must successfully complete four mandatory units focused on the IOSH competency framework.

1. Fundamentals of OSH principles and management systems

Understand OSH principles, the elements of a safety management system and their role in OSH performance, drawing on technical competencies.

2. Principles and application of OSH risk management

Apply OSH tools and techniques, including risk assessment, risk management, workplace inspections and audits. Use core and behavioural competencies to apply these effectively to workplace scenarios.

3. Principles and application of OSH incident management

Understand incidents and their causes, drawing on technical competencies, and apply behavioural and core competencies when carrying out an investigation.

4. Improving OSH performance and culture

Develop your effectiveness as an OSH professional and support the effective application of your organisation’s safety management systems by influencing and collaborating with colleagues. This unit draws heavily on core and behavioural competencies.

IOSH Level 3 Assessment and Exams

Assessment is through an online, remotely invigilated multiple-choice examination and scenario-based tasks. These assess learners’ knowledge and their ability to apply OSH principles in practice.

The IOSH competency framework

The qualification draws on three categories and 12 competency areas:

  • Technical: health and safety law, risk management and incident management.
  • Core: culture, sustainability, stakeholder management, strategy, planning, and leadership and management.
  • Behavioural: personal performance, communication and working with others.

IOSH membership pathway

Successful completion of the IOSH Level 3 Certificate meets the academic requirements for application for IOSH Technical membership (TechIOSH) and designatory letters. Membership is subject to IOSH’s application and eligibility requirements.

Learners are eligible for IOSH student membership, offering learning support through the Blueprint CPD tool, mentoring and the Career Hub.
